We have asked Laurence alot of wildlife questions in the past but we were really interested to know about the more simple things. We asked some interesting questions about trees and rocks to learn more about the natural world.
Trees
How tall is the tallest tree?
The tallest tree is a giant redwood, which can grow incredibly tall.
Why is it called vegetation?
Vegetation is the general name we use for plants, including trees, bushes, and grass.
What is your favourite plant or tree and why?
My favourite plant is a birch tree because it looks different to other trees and stands out.
What percentage of the UK is covered in trees?
Actually only 13.5% of the UK is covered in trees which isn’t much at all!
Rocks
How many types of rocks do you know?
There are three main types of rocks: sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous. I know quite a lot of different rocks, My favourite being a limestone which is a sedimentary rock.
What is the tallest rock and where is it?
The tallest rock is Rudston Monolith in Yorkshire. One of my favourite large rocks though is The Old Man of Hoy, which is actually in Scotland.
How long does it take for rocks to get smaller?
Rocks can wear down very quickly because of weathering. Sometimes it can happen over days, or even seconds during extreme weather. Something like clay erodes very quickly.
What is your favourite rock and why?
My favourite rock is limestone because you can sometimes find fossils inside it.
