This week in Ask Laurence, we caught up with our very own naturalist, Laurence M in Year 10, to talk about one of his latest discoveries — the Great Green Bush Cricket!
The first question I asked was, “What’s your favourite bug?” Laurence told us it’s the Privet Hawk Moth. With its torpedo-shaped body and long, narrow wings, it’s a really striking garden visitor. But what really stands out is its caterpillar – bright lime green with purple streaks!
When we asked what bug he’d caught recently, Laurence told us it was the Great Green Bush Cricket. He found it in the grass (which makes sense — it’s a cricket after all!). He had brought it into the Media Room one break time to show the teachers!
We were curious to know if it would bite, and Laurence said, “They can bite.” He also told us that these crickets can jump over a metre high — that’s pretty impressive!
So how did he manage to get it onto his hand? Laurence said he just scooped it up gently. He also explained that crickets usually live for about a year.
Thank you, Laurence, for sharing your fascinating discovery with us. We always love hearing about your amazing nature finds – we can’t wait to see what you discover next!
