World Book Day is one of the most exciting events at TIFS. Every year, pupils (and teachers!) dress up as their favourite book characters. It’s a brilliant tradition that really shows that we love books.

World Book Day first began on 23rd April 1995 and was founded by UNESCO. It was created to help promote reading to young people all around the world. At TIFS, we definitely celebrate it in style!

This week, we went around the school interviewing pupils and teachers to see how excited they are and what they are planning to dress up as.

First, we asked Joel in Year 7, “Do you think World Book Day is a fun thing to do?”
He replied, “Yeah. I think it is fun because you get to dress up in funny outfits.”

We then asked Harley what he dressed up as last year. He told us he was a Demogorgon from Stranger Things! That must have been a fun outfit to make.

Ted also shared his thoughts. When we asked if he was looking forward to it, he said, “Yeah, because it’s interesting wearing a different uniform!”

Zeco told us that last year he dressed up as Harry Potter – a true classic. We also asked if he had ever done a group costume before. He said he had, back in primary school, when he and his friends dressed up as the Ghostbusters together.

We also interviewed Mr Henley, who was very excited about World Book Day and is planning a group costume this year. In the past, he has dressed up as Willy Wonka and the White Rabbit from Alice in Wonderland.

Flora and Freya are also planning a group costume. At the moment, they are reading The Outsiders. In previous years, Freya dressed as a dictionary (very creative!) and Flora has been an elf.

Not everyone is completely sure what they are dressing up as yet. Max P said he wasn’t very excited because he didn’t know what to be – although last year he dressed as a Banana in Pyjamas! He also said he doesn’t want to do a group costume this time.

We also found out what some pupils are currently reading. Alfie is reading The Explorer, Annie is reading Wurthering Heights, Edith is reading The Hardest Geezer, Kyla is reading The Dog Diaries, Agnes is reading the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Freddy is reading Turn a Blind Eye. Maybe some of the characters will inspire their costumes?!

Overall, it’s amazing to hear about all these different books and costume ideas. It’s clear that the pupils and staff at TIFS are really looking forward to celebrating World Book Day.

We can’t wait to see everyone’s costumes!
