In October, we were fortunate enough to have Lord Michael Grade of Yarmouth come to give a talk at our school. He talked all about his multiple different careers and how he came to be a Lord. He also spoke about his successful career in media.

In 1984 Grade became the controller of BBC 1, a very prestigious role in the media community. He then became the BBC Tv’s  director of programmes 2 years later.

In 2011 Michael Grade Became Lord Michael Grade. Being a lord means you sit in the house of lords. It challenges legislation, holds the government to account, and considers and reports upon public policy. A legislation is a law or set of laws that has been passed by parliament and the house of lords job is to check that parliament has made the right decisions. So as you can imagine becoming a lord was a very important part of Michael Grade’s life and career.

At the moment Lord Grades current role is chair of ofcom. Ofcom is a regulator for communication services. This means that they help protect us from harmful content online and help us have the best experience that we can when using the internet. They also make sure that people are treated equally in programmes.

Personally I was very interested in the inspirational people that Lord Grade had met. Many of the people that he mentioned also have very successful careers in TV and media. The most influential in my opinion being David Attenboroug, the creator of many amazing documentaries on animals and the natural world.
