As the new academic year begins, Year 9 pupils have started their GCSE courses, embarking on a three-year journey that will shape their future careers. We asked some of them how they felt about their subject choices and how they’re settling into this important phase of their school life.

Choosing the Right Options

When we asked why they picked the options they did, a common theme emerged: passion and interest. One pupil explained, “I was thinking about what I was going to enjoy for the next three years.” Many said they picked subjects they were genuinely passionate about, such as PE and Media Studies. For others, long-term career aspirations played a role: “I picked Computer Science because I’d like to work in that field in the future,” one pupil shared.

Another echoed similar thoughts, saying, “I chose Media Studies because it’s cool, and I want to do something in the realm of social media as a career.” Clearly, pupils are not only thinking about their enjoyment but also about how these subjects might help them in the future.

New Faces, New Dynamics

One of the most exciting changes for many Year 9s is having lessons with a mix of different pupils. One pupil shared, “It feels good because I’m not with the same people over and over again,” while another said, “It gives you the opportunity to be friends with different people and get to know them.” This chance to mix with new classmates seems to have been a highlight for many.

Looking Ahead to Future Careers

As pupils begin to explore subjects more deeply, their future ambitions are becoming clearer. We heard a wide range of career aspirations. One pupil dreams of becoming a “pop singer and guitarist” because of their passion for music, while another hopes to pursue a career in sports. The importance of PE in shaping future athletes was a recurring theme, with one pupil stating, “PE is my favourite lesson because I enjoy sports and being active.”

Favourite Subjects and Teachers

When it comes to favourite lessons, PE was the clear winner, with many pupils enjoying the mix of practical and theory work. Music and History also received praise, with one pupil saying, “I love music because it influences emotions.” Another was passionate about PE because it’s “active and engaging.”

As for favourite teachers, there was no shortage of appreciation for several staff members. Mr Reflinski received praise for his engaging teaching style, while Miss Elliott was described as “a nice teacher.” Mr Newman and Mr Sherman stood out for making lessons fun and keeping pupils engaged. Mr Attrill also earned a mention for making pupils laugh, showing that a good sense of humour goes a long way in making classes enjoyable.

As the Year 9s settle into their new GCSE courses, it’s clear they’ve embraced the opportunities that come with their subject choices and are excited for the challenges ahead. Whether they’re dreaming of careers in media, music, or sports, these pupils are ready to take on whatever comes their way!
