As a performing arts specialist school, dance is a principal subject at TIFS and is taken very seriously. With so many extremely talented dancers across the school, we offer them some extraordinary opportunities to develop their skills and broaden their experiences. One of these exciting opportunities was a trip to see the world-famous ballet, Swan Lake, at the Mayflower Theatre on the 13th of March.

This trip was an amazing chance for our dance pupils to experience and explore a different style of performance — not just the styles they specialize in. Seeing a classical ballet like Swan Lake helps to open our dancers’ minds to a wider range of dance styles, inspiring them to become even better dancers and perhaps even motivating them to pursue dance professionally in the future.

What is Swan Lake?

Swan Lake is a traditional ballet based on a Russian and German folk tale, telling the story of a tragic love filled with passion, betrayal, and drama. It follows the story of Odette, a princess who is cursed by an evil sorcerer and transformed into a swan. The hauntingly beautiful storyline, paired with powerful choreography and music, makes it one of the most iconic ballets in history.

Student Opinions

We also spoke to some of our talented dance students to hear what they thought about the performance.

First, we caught up with Jess B, a Year 8 pupil in Rosea. Jess is an extremely talented dancer who will soon be representing England at the Dance World Cup. She said that seeing Swan Lake was an “amazing experience” and that she would “love to go back again.”

Next, we spoke to Eliza W, another Year 8 student from Flavi. Eliza dances with the Joel Morris Dance Academy on the Isle of Wight. She said her “favourite part was when the swans attacked the prince,” highlighting one of the dramatic and powerful moments of the show.

A Positive Experience for All

Overall, all of our TIFS dancers had an amazing time at the performance and had nothing but positive things to say about the trip. Experiences like these are invaluable for our students, offering them the chance to see professional dance at its finest.

We hope that trips like these will continue to be available to our current and future dancers, especially for the new students joining us in September 2025!
